She is the author of three books, including two on Helen Keller and one on Anne Sullivan Macy. A Disability History of the United States  is the first analysis of disability throughout US history and covers the period prior to European arrival through the present. Nielsen is founding president of the Disability History Association and lives in Toledo, Ohio.
